Citroën Berlingo particulate filter additive
Citroën Berlingo P1435: courier, trade and family vans with an additive pump fault
Codes: P1435, P1434, U0118, P15B3, P2463, P2002
P1435 on a Citroën Berlingo is a multiplexed Eolys additive pump fault: the ECU has lost contact with the pump, or the pump reports a fault. The 2008 to 2018 Berlingo with 1.6 HDi or BlueHDi commonly has Eolys, while the 2018 on 1.5 BlueHDi generally does not. We confirm by VIN, test the wiring first and fix it on site. Mobile diagnosis from £249.
We diagnose first, at your vehicle. Fixed price before any work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Mobile to your drive, yard, depot or roadside, 6am to 9pm, 7 days including bank holidays.

Berlingo generations and where Eolys fits
The B9 Berlingo (2008 to 2018), including the multispace estate, often carries an Eolys additive system on the 1.6 HDi and 1.6 BlueHDi engines. The Berlingo van and the Peugeot Partner are the same vehicle under different badges.
The K9 Berlingo (2018 on) uses the 1.5 BlueHDi engine and generally has no additive tank, so a P1435 on one is unusual and needs a VIN-level check. We never assume either way.
Some Euro 6 Berlingos also have AdBlue. That is a separate tank, pump and set of codes, so an AdBlue message does not mean the additive system has failed.
Tank and pump location, and why it fails
On the B9 Berlingo the additive unit sits beside the fuel tank under the rear floor.
Rear underbody exposure
The pump connector sits under the load area, behind the rear wheels. Road spray and grit hit it constantly, especially on vans that do a lot of wet or gritted roads.
Courier life
Delivery Berlingos do hundreds of stop-start drops a day. The filter seldom gets hot for long, so it relies on the additive more than a motorway van does.
Kerbs and loading bays
Low ground clearance when loaded means the rear underside can scrape ramps, speed humps and kerbs. Loom clips and brackets get knocked loose.
Estate and family use
Berlingo estates carry bikes, luggage and tow bars. Towbar fitting is a classic moment for the additive wiring to be pulled, trapped or left disconnected.
What Berlingo drivers notice
The Berlingo is light, so limp mode is easy to spot. The van holds back to a crawl and the rev counter hangs. A courier with a full load might see it on the first hill. A family estate may show only the dash message and a rising fuel bill.
Many Berlingos are run by couriers and small firms who do not get time to book a garage. They also see a code come and go with weather, which is the classic sign of a wet connector.
If the van shows P15B3 or a low additive message, it may only need a refill and counter reset. If P1435 is stored, we need to check the wiring first.
What is distinctive about a Berlingo diagnosis
Berlingo vans from the 2010 to 2014 period can have either the rigid tank or the pouch design, and the fluids are not the same. We read the VIN and look at the tank before ordering anything.
Parts catalogues sometimes list Berlingo and Partner parts under separate numbers even when they are identical. That is another reason we confirm on the vehicle. For the sister model, see the Peugeot Partner P1435 page.
Berlingo additive or AdBlue?
On a Berlingo, Eolys and AdBlue are not the same thing. Eolys is a fuel-borne catalyst that helps the particulate filter burn soot. AdBlue is urea used by the SCR system to cut NOx. Each has its own tank and codes.
P1435 and P1434 relate to Eolys. If your Berlingo is a Euro 6 BlueHDi, check for both. Adding AdBlue does not fix an additive pump fault.
| Eolys additive (P1435) | AdBlue / SCR | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Helps the particulate filter burn off soot | Converts NOx in the exhaust into nitrogen and water |
| Where the fluid goes | Into the diesel fuel tank, at each refuel | Sprayed into the exhaust, ahead of the SCR catalyst |
| The fluid | Cerium-based additive (Eolys) | 32.5% urea solution (AdBlue / DEF) |
| Who tops it up | Workshop only, with a counter reset | The driver, through the blue filler |
| Typical codes | P1435, P1434, U0118, P15B3 | P20EE, P20E8, P207F, P20BA |
| If ignored | Blocked particulate filter, limp mode | Countdown to a no-start |
How we diagnose a Berlingo P1435
We test on site, where the van normally sits, and measure before replacing anything.
Check VIN and fitted system
We determine whether your Berlingo is B9 or K9 and whether an additive system is actually fitted.
Whole-vehicle scan
Engine and network modules are read for matching communication codes.
Live additive data
We read the additive counter, refuel detection, soot mass and differential pressure.
Pump actuator test
A commanded test shows whether the pump runs on demand.
Plug measurements
Supply, earth and CAN lines are measured at the connector with the plug in place.
Under-floor inspection
We check for towbar damage, loose clips, corrosion and pouch condition.
Berlingo P1435 repair, price and timing
We diagnose first and agree a fixed price before any work starts. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome.
We are mobile, covering drives, depots, yards and roadsides from 6am to 9pm, 7 days a week. Many Berlingo faults are resolved on the first visit. If a part is needed, we confirm it, quote it fixed, and fit and code it with a written warranty.
Connector and wiring work
Clean, replace or re-pin the connector and repair damaged wires with sealed joints.
Pump or pouch tank
Replaced only after the circuit is proven, then coded and tested.
Refill and reset
Correct Eolys for the tank type and a counter reset with diagnostic equipment.
Regeneration
If the filter has loaded up, we run a service regeneration and road test.
- Mobile diagnosis and simple fix: From £249 Callout, diagnosis and fixes such as a connector or wiring repair.
- Additive pump or tank assembly: Fixed price after diagnosis Quoted when the cause is proven.
- Service regeneration: Quoted on the day Depends on soot mass in the filter.
P1435 questions
Does a 2020 Citroën Berlingo have Eolys?
Generally not. The 2018 on Berlingo with 1.5 BlueHDi usually has no additive tank. We confirm by VIN before saying either way.
My Berlingo code comes and goes with the weather. Why?
That points at a damp connector or a marginal wire. Moisture changes the signal. A one-off clear does not mean it is fixed.
Can a towbar fitting cause P1435 on a Berlingo?
Yes. The tank area is close to the towbar mountings. A trapped or unclipped loom can set the code soon after the work.
Is the Berlingo Multispace estate the same system as the van?
Yes, on the same engine and year. Layout under the floor is the same, so the same faults apply.
How long does a Berlingo repair take on site?
Diagnosis takes a short visit. A connector or wiring repair is often finished the same day. A pump or tank may need a return visit.
Do you offer a price for a courier van with several Berlingos?
Yes. We offer fleet accounts and quote each van after diagnosis.
