Toyota Hilux AdBlue Repair

Toyota Hilux AdBlue repair: Euro 6 D-4D SCR faults fixed at your farm, yard or roadside

Euro 6 versions of the Toyota Hilux, with the 2.4 D-4D or 2.8 D-4D, use an AdBlue SCR system with a tank, pump, dosing injector and NOx sensors. When a part fails, the dash usually shows an AdBlue or emission system warning with a restart countdown. Short runs and towing make deposits and sensor faults more likely. We repair on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days including bank holidays. From £249, fixed total before work starts, no fix no fee.

What the Hilux AdBlue warning means

A Hilux with an SCR fault usually shows an AdBlue or emission system warning in the instrument cluster, followed by a message that the engine will not restart after a set distance. Exact wording varies by model year, so treat the figure on screen as the guide.

The counter falls with every mile. At zero the engine will not restart once switched off. If you are mid-job, keep the engine running until you are parked where we can reach you, rather than stopping it in a field or on a track.

Common AdBlue faults on the Toyota Hilux

The Euro 6 Hilux is a tough truck, but its AdBlue system suffers from how pickups are used: short runs, towing and exposure to mud and water.

  • NOx sensor faults: P2200, P229F, U029D

NOx sensors drift or fail with age and heat cycling. P2200 is a circuit fault, P229F an out-of-range reading and U029D lost communication. Mud and moisture in the connectors can set the same codes, so we inspect the wiring first.

  • SCR efficiency: P20EE and P2BAD

P20EE and P2BAD indicate that NOx output is higher than the ECU expects. The cause is often a tired downstream sensor, an under-dosing injector or poor fluid, not the catalyst. Live data tells us which.

  • Injector crystallisation: P204F

Hiluxes doing short runs between fields rarely reach full exhaust temperature for long. Urea then crystallises on the injector nozzle and P204F sets. Cleaning often fixes it; a replacement injector is a £750 parts item.

  • Pump pressure: P20E8, P20E9

P20E8 means pressure too low and P20E9 too high. A weak pump, a blocked or crystallised line or a failing pressure sensor can be behind either. We test live pressure before naming a part.

  • Fluid quality and heater: P207F, P20BA

Old or contaminated AdBlue sets P207F, and a failed tank heater sets P20BA. Low-use trucks are prone to old fluid, so we check concentration with a refractometer first.

Live-data diagnosis on a Toyota Hilux

We work methodically so you only pay to replace what has actually failed.

  • Full code read with freeze-frame data

Every stored and pending code is read, with freeze-frame data showing exhaust temperature and dosing state when the fault set.

  • Pump pressure under command

We command the pump and watch pressure in live data. Unstable pressure points to the pump or a restricted line.

  • NOx sensor comparison under load

Both sensors are read at varying load. The downstream reading should fall clearly when dosing is active.

  • Underbody wiring and tank inspection

We check connectors, harness routing and the tank area for mud packing, corrosion, water ingress and damage from tracks or towing.

  • Fluid strength and heater check

A refractometer test checks the fluid, and heater current draw rules the element in or out.

How the Hilux AdBlue repair works

The aim is a Hilux that restarts normally, shows no warning and has verified SCR function. You get a fixed total before any work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty. We attend at your driveway, yard, farm, depot or roadside.

Injector cleaning, fluid replacement and wiring repairs are usually completed on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we finish diagnosis, agree the fixed total and return to fit. The prices below are parts prices; labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA) and included in the total you approve first.

  • Countdown cleared and restart proven

Codes are cleared, the countdown confirmed gone, and the engine is shut down and restarted to prove the lockout has released.

  • SCR function verified at temperature

Pressure, NOx readings and heater status are monitored at operating temperature before we leave.

  • Written warranty

Every repair carries a written warranty.

  • Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Callout, diagnosis and simple repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid replacement or a wiring fix. Labour for larger jobs is quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • NOx sensor repair job: From £249 (parts) Parts price. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA), with a fixed total agreed before any work starts.
  • AdBlue injector: £750 (parts) Parts price only, for cases where cleaning does not restore dosing. Labour quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • AdBlue tank assembly: £795 (parts) Parts price only. Labour quoted after diagnosis (POA). The fixed total is confirmed before the part is ordered.

Software path — discussed only after diagnosis

Physical repair comes first on every Hilux callout. Any software option is only discussed after diagnosis, once we know which component has failed and what a proper repair costs.

If it is raised at all, we explain the legal position clearly so you can make an informed decision.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

Which Hiluxes have AdBlue

AdBlue is fitted to Euro 6 versions of the Hilux with the 2.4 D-4D and 2.8 D-4D diesel engines. Earlier Euro 5 trucks generally do not have it. Exact years vary by market and trim, so give us the registration and we confirm what your truck has.

Toyota Proace vans are Stellantis-based and use that group's SCR system, which is a different design from the Hilux.

Farm, estate and towing use

Hiluxes on farms and estates work in conditions that suit the truck but not the AdBlue system. The tank, lines and NOx sensor wiring sit low, where mud, slurry and water reach them. Pressure washing can push water into connectors, causing intermittent U029D and P2200 codes that clear and return.

Towing a trailer or livestock box raises exhaust temperature and load, which is hard on NOx sensors, though it also helps burn off some deposits. We inspect for physical damage and corrosion as well as electrical faults.

Short runs between fields and old fluid

A truck that makes many short trips seldom gets the exhaust fully hot for long enough to keep the injector clear. Deposits build, dosing drops and P204F or P20EE follows.

AdBlue also ages. Fluid kept for a year or more, or stored in a warm shed, can fall out of specification and set P207F. Use fresh, sealed AdBlue, and give the truck a proper road run now and then. We can drain and refill the system on site.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Toyota Hilux have AdBlue?

Euro 6 versions with the 2.4 D-4D or 2.8 D-4D do. Earlier trucks generally do not. Give us your registration and we confirm.

How much does Hilux AdBlue repair cost?

Diagnosis and straightforward fixes start from £249. Parts prices are an injector at £750 and a tank assembly at £795, with a NOx sensor job from £249 in parts. Labour is quoted after diagnosis, with a fixed total before work starts. No fix, no fee.

My Hilux warns it will not restart. What now?

The ECU is counting down miles to a restart lockout. Keep the engine running until you are parked somewhere accessible, then call 0203 038 8555 and we attend on site.

Can you come to my farm?

Yes. We work at farms, yards, estates, depots, driveways and roadsides, 6am–9pm, 7 days a week including bank holidays.

Why does short-run use cause AdBlue faults?

Short trips keep the exhaust cooler, so urea can crystallise on the injector nozzle. That reduces dosing and can set P204F or P20EE. Cleaning often resolves it.

Is the Proace the same as the Hilux?

No. The Proace is Stellantis-based and uses a different SCR system from the Hilux. We repair both, and our diagnosis starts with the registration.
