AdBlue Tank Replacement

AdBlue Tank Replacement: £795 Parts, Fitted at Your Vehicle

A replacement AdBlue tank is £795 for the part with Bolt Remaps. Labour is quoted after diagnosis because access varies by vehicle. On many vans the heater, pump and level sender are sealed inside the tank, so one failed element means a new tank. We prove that with live data first, rule out wiring, then agree one fixed total before any work starts. Fitted on your drive or yard, with a written warranty.

Signs your AdBlue tank has failed

The tank is not just a container. On most modern vans it carries the heater, the pump, the level sender, the temperature sensor and often the quality sensor in one assembly. When any of these fails, the dash shows an AdBlue or emissions warning, and a countdown usually follows.

Typical messages are "AdBlue system fault", "Check AdBlue", "No restart in 500 miles" or a gauge that reads empty straight after a top-up. Common codes include P20B9 and P20BA (heater), P20E8 (pressure too low), P203F to P2043 (level and temperature) and P207F (fluid quality). None of these codes on their own prove the tank has failed. They tell us where to test.

What makes an AdBlue tank need replacing

  • Built-in heater open circuit

The heater keeps the fluid liquid below about -11°C. When the element goes open circuit, P20B9 or P20BA is stored, often in the first cold snap. On tanks where the heater is sealed in, the whole tank is replaced.

  • Integrated pump losing pressure

On Sprinter, Crafter, Boxer, Relay and Ducato the pump sits in the tank module. A worn motor or blocked inlet filter drops rail pressure and logs P20E8. If the pump cannot be bought separately, the tank assembly is the repair.

  • Level sender reading wrong

The gauge reads empty after a fill, or the range jumps around. The sender is a float or ultrasonic sensor inside the tank. A failed sender keeps the countdown running even with a full tank.

  • Quality sensor rejecting good fluid

P207F that comes back after a drain and refill with certified fluid points to the quality sensor. On many platforms it is part of the tank module.

  • Contamination damage

Diesel, water or screenwash in the AdBlue tank attacks seals, the pump and the sensors. A flush may save it. If the internals are damaged, the tank is replaced and the lines are flushed.

  • Cracks, leaks and impact damage

Tanks hang under the van and take kerb strikes, speed bumps and stone damage. A cracked tank or leaking seam leaves white crystal trails and loses fluid.

How we prove the tank has failed before ordering one

  • Full code read and freeze-frame

Every stored and pending code is read from the engine and SCR modules. Freeze-frame data shows temperature, level and pressure at the moment each fault set.

  • Heater resistance and current

We measure the heater circuit at the plug and command it on with the diagnostic tool. An open circuit at the tank confirms the element. A good reading at the tank but not at the ECU points to wiring.

  • Live pump pressure test

We command the pump and graph rail pressure against the manufacturer target. A pump that cannot reach or hold pressure is confirmed, and the injector is checked so a leak is not mistaken for a weak pump.

  • Level and temperature sender readings

Live level and temperature values are compared with the real fill and the ambient temperature. A sender stuck at one value is easy to spot on the graph.

  • Wiring and connector inspection

The tank plug sits low and collects road salt. A corroded or water-filled connector gives the same codes as a failed heater or sender, and costs far less to fix. We check it before quoting a tank.

  • Fluid test with a refractometer

We confirm the fluid is 32.5% urea. If it is contaminated, the tank is drained and flushed so the new parts are not damaged on day one.

AdBlue tank replacement: what the job involves

Once the tank is confirmed, you get one fixed total: £795 for the tank plus labour for your vehicle. Nothing is ordered until you agree. No fix, no fee on the agreed outcome. Written warranty.

  • Drain and remove

The old fluid is drained into a sealed container. The tank is supported, the straps, lines and plug are released and the tank is lowered. On some vans a heat shield, step or spare wheel carrier comes off first.

  • Fit the new tank

The new tank goes up with fresh seals and clips where needed. Lines and the connector are cleaned and checked before they are refitted.

  • Refill and prime

We refill with ISO 22241 certified AdBlue and run the priming routine so the pump builds pressure and the lines are full.

  • Adaptations and road check

Codes are cleared, the countdown is reset and any adaptations the vehicle needs are run. We confirm heater, pressure, level and NOx readings with live data before handing the vehicle back.

  • AdBlue tank (parts): £795 Complete tank assembly, including the built-in heater, pump or sender where your vehicle has them.
  • Diagnosis to confirm the tank: From £249 Callout and live-data tests on heater, pump, sender and wiring before any tank is ordered.
  • Fitting labour: POA Quoted after diagnosis. Depends on the vehicle and what has to come off for access.
  • Drain and flush (if contaminated): POA Only where the fluid test fails. Quoted with the rest of the job.

Software path: considered only after diagnosis

A new tank is the correct repair when the tank has failed. Software changes to the SCR strategy are not a substitute for a failed tank on a road vehicle. We explain the options and the legal position before anything other than a repair is discussed.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

Vehicles we replace AdBlue tanks on

These are the tank jobs we see most often. If your vehicle is not listed, send the reg and we will check the part.

  • Mercedes Sprinter

Heater and pump are part of the tank module on most models. Cold-weather heater faults are the most common reason we fit one.

  • VW Crafter

Tank-integrated pump and heater. Pressure faults and heater codes are both common on high-mileage vans.

  • Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Relay and Fiat Ducato

Pump, heater, filter and sender sit in one tank unit. A failed pump on these vans usually means the full assembly.

  • Ford Transit and Transit Custom

Tank and pump layout varies by year. We check whether the fault can be fixed with a separate part before quoting a tank.

  • Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo

Small van tanks with built-in heater and sender. Heater and level faults are the usual cause.

  • VW, Audi, Skoda, BMW and Mercedes cars

Many diesel cars carry the AdBlue tank under the boot floor or behind a wheel arch liner. Access time varies, so labour is quoted per car.

Can you just replace the heater or pump?

Sometimes. A few platforms sell the heater, pump or sender as a separate part, and on those we replace only what has failed. On many others the parts are sealed into the tank, and the manufacturer only supplies the full assembly.

We check the parts catalogue for your exact vehicle before quoting. If a cheaper single part will do the job properly, that is what we quote.

Keeping the new tank healthy

Use certified AdBlue from a sealed container and keep the filler area clean. Never top up from an old open container or a funnel used for anything else. Let the engine finish its shutdown purge before you disconnect the battery or cut the ignition early.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new AdBlue tank cost?

The tank is £795 for the part. Labour depends on your vehicle and is quoted after diagnosis. You get one fixed total, parts plus labour, before we start.

How do I know it is the tank and not the wiring?

We test the heater, pump and sender at the tank plug and compare with what the ECU sees. A corroded connector can set the same codes as a failed tank, so we rule it out first.

Can you fit the tank on my drive?

Yes. We are fully mobile and fit tanks on drives, yards and work sites, 6am to 9pm, 7 days, including bank holidays.

How long does an AdBlue tank replacement take?

Most tank swaps are done in one visit once the part is on the van. Vehicles that need a heat shield or carrier removed take longer. We give you a time with the quote.

Will the countdown clear after the new tank is fitted?

Yes. After fitting and priming we clear the codes, reset the countdown and confirm a clean dash with live data before we leave.

Do I need a new tank if I put diesel in the AdBlue?

Not always. If caught early, a drain and flush can save it. If the pump or sensors are damaged, the tank is replaced. Do not start the engine and call us first.

Is there a warranty on the new tank?

Yes. The repair comes with a written warranty.
