Ford Ranger AdBlue Repair

Ford Ranger AdBlue repair: EcoBlue SCR faults and restart countdowns fixed on site

The Ford Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue uses the same SCR family as the Transit: a tank-mounted pump, dosing injector and NOx sensors. When a part fails, the dash usually reads "AdBlue fault: No engine restart in X miles" and counts down. The commonest causes are NOx sensors, injector crystallisation and the pump. We diagnose and repair on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days including bank holidays. From £249, fixed total before work starts, no fix no fee.

What "No engine restart in X miles" means on a Ranger

On a Ford Ranger the message usually reads "AdBlue fault: No engine restart in X miles", sometimes alongside "Emission system fault". The ECU has logged an SCR fault and the mileage figure falls as you drive.

At zero the engine will not restart once switched off. If the countdown is running, avoid stopping the engine until you are somewhere we can reach you. A pickup left running on a muddy site or a remote track is far easier to attend than one that will not crank.

Common AdBlue faults on the Ford Ranger

The Ranger shares its EcoBlue SCR architecture with the Transit, so the failure patterns are familiar to us. Pickup use adds exposure to mud, water and vibration around the underbody tank and wiring.

  • NOx sensor faults: P2200, P229F, U029D

The upstream and downstream NOx sensors age with heat cycles. P2200 points to the circuit, P229F to an out-of-range reading and U029D to lost communication with the sensor. Water or mud in a connector can cause the same codes, so we check the wiring before condemning the sensor.

  • SCR efficiency low: P20EE

P20EE sets when the ECU calculates that the catalyst is not cutting NOx as expected. The cause may be a drifting downstream sensor, an under-dosing injector or poor fluid, rather than the catalyst itself. We separate these with live data first.

  • Dosing injector crystallisation: P204F

Urea deposits build up on the injector nozzle, especially on trucks that do short runs and never get fully hot. P204F logs a system performance fault. Cleaning works in many cases; a replacement injector is a £750 parts item where it does not.

  • Pump and pressure faults: P20E8, P20E9

P20E8 means reductant pressure too low and P20E9 too high. A worn pump, a blocked line or a frozen or crystallised pipe can cause either. We test live pressure before suggesting any part.

  • Heater and fluid quality: P20BA, P207F

A failed tank heater sets P20BA, mostly in cold weather. P207F flags fluid quality, often from old stock or the wrong product. We check concentration with a refractometer before replacing the quality sensor.

Live-data diagnosis on a Ford Ranger

We use Ford-capable diagnostic equipment and work through the system in order, so you pay for the fault that is actually there.

  • Full code read with freeze-frame data

Stored and pending codes are read from the engine and SCR modules. Freeze-frame data shows exhaust temperature and dosing state when the fault set.

  • Pump pressure under command

The pump is commanded on and pressure watched in live data. Unstable pressure points to the pump or a blocked line; stable pressure moves attention to the injector and sensors.

  • NOx sensor readings under load

Both sensors are compared at varying load. The downstream reading should fall clearly when dosing is active. A flat trace suggests a sensor or catalyst problem.

  • Wiring, connectors and underbody tank inspection

We inspect the harness, connectors and tank area for mud packing, corrosion, water ingress and damage from off-road use or towing.

  • Fluid concentration and heater check

A refractometer test confirms the fluid is the right strength, and heater current draw rules the element in or out.

How the Ranger AdBlue repair works

The aim is a Ranger that starts normally, shows no warning and has verified SCR function. You get a fixed total before any work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty. We come to your driveway, yard, farm, depot or roadside.

Cleaning, fluid replacement and wiring repairs are usually done on the first visit. Where a part must be ordered, we complete diagnosis first, agree the fixed total and return to fit. The prices below are parts prices; labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA) and included in the fixed total you approve before work begins.

  • Countdown cleared and restart proven

Codes are cleared, the countdown confirmed gone, and the engine is shut down and restarted to prove the lockout has released.

  • SCR function verified at temperature

Pressure, NOx readings and heater status are watched with the engine at operating temperature before we leave.

  • Written warranty

Every repair carries a written warranty.

  • Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Callout, diagnosis and simple repairs such as injector cleaning, fluid replacement or a wiring fix. Labour for larger jobs is quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • NOx sensor repair job: From £249 (parts) Parts price. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA), with a fixed total agreed before any work starts.
  • AdBlue injector: £750 (parts) Parts price only, needed where cleaning does not restore dosing. Labour quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • AdBlue tank assembly: £795 (parts) Parts price only. Labour quoted after diagnosis (POA). The fixed total is confirmed before the part is ordered.

Software path — discussed only after diagnosis

Physical repair comes first on every Ranger callout. Any software option is only discussed after diagnosis, once we know which component has failed and what a proper repair costs.

If it is raised at all, we explain the legal position clearly so you can make an informed decision.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

Ranger generations and engines we cover

The 2.0 EcoBlue arrived on the Ranger from 2019 in single-turbo and bi-turbo forms, and both use an SCR system. The new-generation Ranger from 2023 is offered with the 2.0 EcoBlue and a 3.0 V6 diesel, and we cover both.

The Ranger Raptor sold in the UK is petrol, so it has no AdBlue system. If you are unsure whether your truck has one, give us the registration and we confirm straight away. The Transit uses the same EcoBlue SCR family, so our Ford Transit AdBlue repair page (linked below) covers the shared component detail.

Pickup-specific problems: towing, off-road and water

A Ranger lives a harder life than a van. The AdBlue tank, lines and NOx sensor wiring sit low, where mud, stones and water get to them. Packed mud holds moisture against connectors, and a pressure-washed underbody can push water into plugs. Both cause intermittent U029D and P2200 codes that vanish and return.

Towing raises exhaust temperature and load, which is hard on NOx sensors, while heavy off-road use can knock pipes and the tank. We inspect for physical damage as well as electrical faults.

Low-mileage farm use and old fluid

A Ranger that does short hops around a yard rarely gets the exhaust fully hot, which encourages urea deposits on the injector. AdBlue also ages. Fluid left in a tank for a year or more, or stored in a warm shed, can lose strength and trigger P207F.

If your truck sits for weeks, try to run it up to temperature regularly and use fresh, sealed AdBlue. We can drain and refill the system on site as part of a straightforward fix.

Frequently asked questions

What does "AdBlue fault: No engine restart" mean on a Ford Ranger?

The ECU has found an SCR fault and is counting down the miles before it stops the engine restarting. At zero it will not restart once switched off. Call 0203 038 8555 and we attend on site.

How much does Ford Ranger AdBlue repair cost?

Diagnosis and straightforward fixes start from £249. Parts prices are an injector at £750 and a tank assembly at £795, with a NOx sensor job from £249 in parts. Labour is quoted after diagnosis, with a fixed total before any work starts. No fix, no fee.

Does the Ranger Raptor have AdBlue?

The Raptor sold in the UK is petrol, so it has no AdBlue system. Diesel Rangers from the 2.0 EcoBlue onward do. Give us your registration and we confirm what your truck has.

Can I keep driving with the AdBlue warning on?

Yes, while the countdown is running, but every mile reduces what is left. Keep the engine running until you are somewhere safe and accessible, then call us before it reaches zero.

Is the Ranger AdBlue system the same as the Transit?

They are in the same EcoBlue SCR family and share fault codes and diagnostic methods, but parts and layout differ. We repair both.

Can you come to my farm or site?

Yes. We work at driveways, yards, farms, depots and roadsides, 6am–9pm, 7 days a week including bank holidays.
