What the Navara AdBlue warning means

A Navara with an SCR fault usually shows an AdBlue or emission system warning, followed by a message that the engine will not restart after a set distance. Wording varies by model year, so rely on the figure on screen.

The counter falls with every mile. At zero the engine will not restart once switched off. If it is running, keep it running until you are parked somewhere we can reach you.

Common AdBlue faults on the Nissan Navara

The 2.3 dCi is Renault-derived, and its SCR faults follow familiar patterns. Pickup use adds mud, water and towing loads.

• NOx sensor faults: P2200, P229F, U029D

  NOx sensors drift or fail with age. P2200 is a circuit fault, P229F an out-of-range reading and U029D lost communication. Mud and moisture in the connectors can set the same codes, so we inspect wiring first.

• SCR efficiency: P20EE and P2BAD

  These codes mean NOx output is higher than the ECU expects. The cause is often a drifting downstream sensor, under-dosing injector or poor fluid rather than the catalyst. Live data separates them.

• Injector crystallisation: P204F

  Urea deposits on the injector nozzle reduce dosing and set P204F. Short-run trucks are most affected. We clean first; a replacement injector is a £750 parts item.

• Pump pressure faults: P20E8, P20E9

  P20E8 means pressure too low and P20E9 too high. A worn pump, a blocked line or a crystallised pipe can cause either. We test live pressure before naming a part.

• Fluid quality and heater: P207F, P20BA

  Old or contaminated AdBlue sets P207F, and a failed heater sets P20BA. We check concentration with a refractometer before replacing a sensor or tank part.

Navara models and engines

The D23 (NP300) Navara uses the Renault-derived 2.3 dCi. Later Euro 6 versions use AdBlue, though exact model years and trims vary, so give us the registration and we confirm what your truck has.

The Renault Alaskan and the Mercedes X-Class (X 250d and X 350d) were closely related twins, sold briefly. Many fitted a similar underlying drivetrain, and we can look at them too once we confirm the engine from the registration.

Parts supply after the Navara left the market

Nissan stopped selling the Navara in the UK and Europe around 2021. Dealer stock of some parts can be limited and lead times unpredictable, so a long wait for a new part is a real risk.

Towing, mud and old fluid

The tank, lines and NOx sensor wiring sit low on a pickup, where mud and water reach them. Packed mud and pressure washing cause intermittent U029D and P2200 codes. Towing raises exhaust temperature and load, which is hard on sensors.

Trucks that do few miles, such as farm and estate vehicles, also suffer from injector deposits and old fluid, which set P204F and P207F. We can drain and refill the system on site.
