Volvo AdBlue Repair: D3, D4, D5 and B4 Diesel SCR Faults Fixed on Site
Volvo diesels with SCR, mainly the 2.0 Drive-E D3, D4 and D5 from about 2018 plus B4 and B5 mild hybrids in the XC40, XC60, XC90, V60, V90 and S90, can show an AdBlue service message and a refill or no-start countdown when a component faults. We diagnose on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days including bank holidays. From £249, fixed total before work starts. No fix, no fee, written warranty.

Volvo AdBlue messages and what they usually mean
Typical messages include "AdBlue: Service required", a request to refill AdBlue, and a countdown to a no-start such as "Engine cannot be restarted in X miles". Wording differs between models and software versions, so use these as examples only.
A refill message with a low tank is a top-up job. "Service required" with a full tank usually means the system has logged a fault in a sensor, heater, pump or injector. Topping up will not clear it. Once a countdown starts, plan a repair before it reaches zero.
Why Volvo diesels develop AdBlue faults
Volvo's 2.0 Drive-E diesels use SCR with a heated tank, a delivery pump, a dosing injector and NOx sensors. Faults are usually component related, and live data tells us which.
NOx sensor faults: P2200, P229F, U029D
A worn or contaminated sensor can set P2200 (circuit), P229F (range or performance) or U029D (lost communication). Wiring and connector damage can set the same codes, so we test the circuit as well as the sensor.
Low SCR efficiency: P20EE, P2BAD
P20EE (efficiency below threshold) and P2BAD (NOx exceedance) tell us conversion is poor. The cause is often a sensor, dosing or fluid problem, not the catalyst itself. We work through the cheaper causes first.
Pump pressure faults: P20E8, P20E9
P20E8 (pressure too low) can come from a weak pump, an air leak or a blocked line. P20E9 (pressure too high) can come from a blocked injector or line. Commanded pressure tests separate them.
Heater faults: P20BA
P20BA (heater performance) sets when the heater element or its circuit is not working as expected. Cold weather makes it more noticeable, but it can set at any time of year.
Injector and fluid problems: P204F, P207F
Dried urea on the injector tip can set P204F (system performance). Degraded or diluted fluid can set P207F (quality). Cars that do short journeys or low annual mileage see both more often.
What we check on a Volvo callout
We read the SCR system with live data first, so the part that has failed is confirmed before anything is quoted.
Full code read and freeze-frame data
Stored and pending codes are read from the engine and SCR modules, with freeze-frame data showing the conditions when each fault set.
NOx sensor comparison under load
Upstream and downstream readings are compared at idle and under load. We check wiring and connectors before condemning a sensor.
Pump pressure and dosing test
The pump is commanded and pressure monitored against target. Commanded versus delivered dosing helps separate a weak pump from a blocked injector.
Heater circuit test
Heater current and continuity are checked, so a wiring or fuse fault is not mistaken for a failed assembly.
Fluid quality check
A refractometer reading shows whether the AdBlue is the right concentration. Old or contaminated fluid is drained and replaced with ISO 22241 AdBlue where needed.
Volvo AdBlue repair: what you pay
Prices below are for parts only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA), and we give you one fixed total before any work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty on every repair. We come to your driveway, office car park, yard or roadside.
Warning and countdown cleared
After the repair, codes are cleared and we confirm the message has gone and the car restarts normally.
SCR verified with live data
Dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status are checked with the engine warm before we leave.
Written warranty
Every repair carries a written warranty.

Software path — discussed only after diagnosis
Physical repair comes first on every Volvo callout. Any software option is only discussed after diagnosis, once we know what has failed and what the repair would cost.
If it comes up, we explain the legal position clearly so you can decide with the full picture.
Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.
Volvo models and engines we attend
The 2.0 Drive-E diesels (D3, D4 and D5) with SCR are found in the XC40, XC60, XC90, V60, V90 and S90, with most SCR cars dating from about 2018. The B4 and B5 diesel mild hybrids add a 48V system but use the same kind of SCR hardware.
If you are not sure which engine your car has or whether it has an AdBlue system, give us the registration when you call and we will confirm.
Owning a Volvo diesel long term
Volvo ended diesel production around 2024, so these cars are now in the used market for good. That makes keeping the SCR system healthy more important: parts supply is likely to be fine for years, but the cars are not being replaced by newer diesel versions.
Regular longer runs help the system complete full dosing cycles. If your car mostly does short trips, a fluid check once a year is cheap insurance.
Mild hybrid B4 and B5 diesels
The mild hybrid system does not change how the SCR side is diagnosed, but a weak 12V or 48V supply can cause odd warnings on its own. We check battery health and supply voltage as part of the visit so a low-voltage issue is not mistaken for a failed component.
Frequently asked questions
My Volvo says "AdBlue: Service required". Is it serious?
It usually means the system has logged a fault, especially if the tank is full. A countdown may follow, so do not leave it. Call 0203 038 8555 and we diagnose on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days.
Will topping up AdBlue clear the warning?
Only if the message is a genuine low-level request. A component fault stays logged after a top-up and needs repair.
How much does a Volvo AdBlue repair cost?
Diagnosis and straightforward fixes start from £249. Parts prices are NOx sensor job from £249, injector £750 and tank assembly £795, parts only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis, with a fixed total before work starts.
Do you cover D3, D4, D5 and B4 engines?
Yes. We attend the 2.0 Drive-E D3, D4 and D5 and the B4 and B5 mild hybrid diesels in the XC40, XC60, XC90, V60, V90 and S90.
Volvo stopped making diesels. Is it still worth repairing?
In most cases, yes. A repair to a sound car is usually cheaper than replacing it, and we give a fixed total before any work starts so you can decide.
What if you cannot fix it?
No fix, no fee. Every repair has a written warranty, and we work on your driveway, office car park, yard or roadside.
