Land Rover AdBlue messages and what they usually mean

Typical Land Rover messages include "AdBlue system fault", "AdBlue level low" and a countdown along the lines of "Engine will not restart in X miles" or "No engine start in X miles". The exact wording and the mileage steps vary by model, year and software, so treat these as examples rather than a guarantee of what your car will show.

A low-level message is a genuine top-up request. A fault message with a full tank usually means the control unit has logged a component fault, and topping up will not clear it. If a countdown is running, avoid switching off away from home or somewhere we cannot reach you. Call us before it reaches zero.

Why Land Rover and Range Rover diesels develop AdBlue faults

Most current Land Rover diesels use SCR with a heated tank, a pump or delivery module, a dosing injector and a pair of NOx sensors. The usual suspects are below, though the exact fault always depends on live data from your car.

  • NOx sensor faults: P2200, P229F, U029D

The NOx sensors sit in a hot, wet exhaust environment and age with mileage. A failing sensor can set P2200 (circuit), P229F (range or performance) or U029D (lost communication with the sensor module). On some cars the wiring or connector is the real problem, so we test the circuit before recommending a new sensor.

  • Tank heater faults: P20BA

The heater stops AdBlue freezing in cold weather. P20BA (heater performance) can set when the element or its circuit fails. On many Land Rover models the heater is part of the tank assembly, so confirming it with a live heater test matters before any tank is quoted.

  • Pump or pressure faults: P20E8, P20E9

P20E8 means reductant pressure is too low, often a weak pump, an air leak or a blocked line. P20E9 means pressure is too high, which can point to a blocked injector or line. Pressure tests under command separate the two.

  • Crystallised dosing injector: P204F

Dried urea builds up on the injector tip and cuts dosing, which can set P204F (system performance). Short journeys make this more likely. Cleaning works in some cases, replacement in others.

  • Poor SCR efficiency or quality: P20EE, P207F, P2BAD

P20EE (SCR efficiency below threshold) and P2BAD (NOx exceedance) are often the result of a sensor, dosing or fluid issue rather than a failed catalyst. P207F points to fluid quality, such as degraded or diluted AdBlue. We rule out the cheaper causes first.

What we check on a Land Rover callout

Every visit starts with a structured read of the SCR system using live data, so we know which part has actually failed before you are quoted.

  • Full code read with freeze-frame data

Stored and pending codes are read from the engine and SCR modules. Freeze-frame data shows conditions at the moment each fault set, which often points to the failing part.

  • NOx sensor live data and wiring

Upstream and downstream readings are compared at idle and under load. We check connectors and wiring for water ingress or damage before condemning a sensor.

  • Pump pressure and dosing test

The pump is commanded and pressure watched against target. Commanded versus delivered dosing helps separate a weak pump from a blocked injector.

  • Heater circuit test

Heater current draw and circuit continuity are checked so a wiring or relay fault is not mistaken for a failed tank assembly.

  • Fluid quality and filler checks

Concentration is checked with a refractometer, and we look at the filler area. Filler position varies: beside the fuel filler on many cars, but under the bonnet or in the boot on others.

Land Rover AdBlue repair: what you pay

Prices below are for parts only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA), and we give you one fixed total before any work starts. No fix, no fee. Written warranty on every repair. We work on your driveway, office car park, yard or roadside.

  • Countdown cleared and normal starting confirmed

Once the fault is repaired, codes are cleared and we confirm the warning is gone and the engine restarts normally.

  • SCR checked with live data before we leave

Dosing pressure, both NOx sensors and heater status are watched with the engine warm. Anything marginal is dealt with on the day.

  • Written warranty

Every repair carries a written warranty.

  • Diagnosis and straightforward fix: From £249 Callout, diagnosis and simple repairs such as fluid drain and refill, injector cleaning or connector and wiring repair.
  • NOx sensor repair job: From £249 (parts) Parts price only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • AdBlue injector: £750 (parts) Parts price only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA).
  • AdBlue tank assembly: £795 (parts) Parts price only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis (POA). Not every fault needs a tank.

Software path — discussed only after diagnosis

Physical repair comes first on every Land Rover callout. Any software option is only discussed after diagnosis, once we know what has failed and what a repair would cost.

If it comes up, we explain the legal position clearly so you can decide with the full picture.

Any software change that disables AdBlue or SCR monitoring is supplied for off-road, competition or export use only, and the customer declares any modifications. It is never offered as a road-legal fix. Read our disclaimer.

Models and engines we attend

Ingenium 2.0 diesels are found in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, Velar and Range Rover Sport, among others. The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 Euro 6 cars (from about 2016) cover the Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The newer Ingenium 3.0 six-cylinder D250, D300 and D350 are mild hybrids found in the Defender (2020 on), Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Velar, depending on year.

The Defender (2020 on) and Discovery 5 also use SCR on their diesel engines. If you are unsure whether your car has an AdBlue system, give us the registration when you call and we will confirm.

Where the AdBlue filler is

Filler position is not the same on every model. On many cars it sits beside the fuel filler. On some it is under the bonnet, and on others it is in the boot area. Check the handbook if you cannot find it.

Use proper ISO 22241 AdBlue only. Topping up cures a low-level warning, but it will not clear a component fault.

Tank heater and NOx sensor faults

In our experience, heater and NOx sensor faults are among the more common reasons a Land Rover shows an AdBlue warning with a full tank. Neither is something to guess at: a sensor that looks suspect can be a wiring or connector fault, and a heater code can be a circuit problem rather than a failed tank.

Frequently asked questions

My Land Rover says "AdBlue system fault". What should I do?

If the tank is full, the control unit has probably logged a component fault. Topping up will not clear it. Avoid long trips away from home and call us on 0203 038 8555. We diagnose on site, 6am–9pm, 7 days.

Can I keep driving with a countdown on the dash?

You can usually drive while it counts down, but every mile uses up the remaining distance and the exact behaviour varies by model. If it reaches zero the car may not restart. Call us before that point.

How much does a Land Rover AdBlue repair cost?

Diagnosis and straightforward fixes start from £249. Parts prices are NOx sensor job from £249, injector £750 and tank assembly £795, parts only. Labour is quoted after diagnosis, and you get a fixed total before work starts.

Where is the AdBlue filler on my Range Rover or Defender?

It varies. On many cars it is beside the fuel filler. On some it is under the bonnet or in the boot. Check the handbook for your exact model and year.

Do you cover Ingenium and TDV6 engines?

Yes. We attend Ingenium 2.0 and 3.0 diesels and the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 Euro 6 cars, plus the Defender and Discovery 5. Give us the registration and we will confirm before we travel.

What if you cannot fix it?

No fix, no fee. You approve a fixed total before work starts, and repairs carry a written warranty. We work on your driveway, office car park, yard or roadside.
